New York needs an Attorney General who can build on the work of Eliot Spitzer and Andrew Cuomo - someone who knows how to creatively use the office to get results for all New Yorkers.
Eric Dinallo is the only candidate for Attorney General that has worked in the Attorney General’s Office and has the experience we need now.
As an Assistant Attorney General, Eric led the Investor Protection Bureau that held financial firms accountable to their customers and the public. He uncovered the Martin Act, allowing the Attorney General’s office to go after fraud and abuse on Wall Street. After hearing about shady business practices, Eric used the Martin Act to launch an investigation of the country’s biggest banks and investment firms. The conflicts of interest he uncovered were cheating consumers, and despite being told that the companies had ‘powerful friends,’ the Attorney General’s office pursued the case.
The lawsuit secured a $1.4 billion settlement - the largest of its kind at the time - as well as new regulations to prevent the abuses from happening again. The case forever changed the office, making it the consumer protection powerhouse it is today.
Eric continued to use the Martin Act to creatively pursue justice for New Yorkers. When Sears fired Jewish employees for refusing to work on Shabbat, Eric used the Martin Act to prosecute the company, charging that it failed to let investors know about its civil rights violations. The employees prevailed and national department store chain was compelled to respect their employees’ rights.
As the state’s Chief of Investor Protection, Eric worked to safeguard all New Yorkers. He helped Western New York seniors who were defrauded by the area’s largest investment scheme in history. He went after rogue insurance brokers who exploited dairy farmers in Mohawk Valley, the Capital District and Central New York. He stood up for Long Islanders who were scammed into a rare coin scheme and swindled out of their life savings.
As someone with direct experience in the Attorney General’s office, Eric has taken what he knows about the office and made it work for New Yorkers. He has outlined his plans to take on public corruption in Albany, to reform how state government operates, to expand access to the office, and advance civil rights for LGBT New Yorkers.
Eric has always been and will continue to be committed to putting New Yorkers first.
